The U.S. National Science Foundation Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Quantum Computation is, at its core, a deep integration of research, education, workforce development, outreach, coordination, and partnership activities. A matrix of activities drives the NSF CIQC toward its aims. As shown below, many of these activities serve several roles simultaneously. For example, the NSF CIQC winter school is primarily an activity that contributes to our education and workforce development goals, focusing on graduate education. But it also serves an outreach role, bringing new entrants from outside the NSF CIQC into quantum information science; an internal research coordination role, by focusing the NSF CIQC’s attention on a research topic of central interest; and external research coordination role, organizing research on a critical topic broadly across academic, industry and other research efforts.

This activities matrix organizes the NSF CIQC’s activities according to their primary role, and their corresponding location within our website. The puzzle piece logos serve as a reminder of the integrated role of each activity across our institute.
